It’s a rollercoaster of a year for Instagram as it has adjusted to Meta’s “flattening” with three rounds of mass layoffs.
After cutting staff by about 11,000 in November, and an additional 10,000 in 2023, Meta waved goodbye to some Instagram employees across teams handling product, marketing, and partnerships.
While Instagram adapts to its new makeup, many of its executives are taking on new roles as Meta continues to reshuffle teams across its family of apps.
Within Instagram, specifically, the company has restructured its product organization to focus on four pillars — sharing, home, community, and business — according to an April report by The Information. For instance, Tessa Lyons, a director of product, will spearhead Instagram’s “home pillar, per her LinkedIn.
Instagram’s partnerships org, which handles relationships with public figures, creators, and brands, is also in for a massive overhaul, after cuts in May slashed many roles. Nick Grudin, who rejoined Meta as VP of partnerships in March after about a year at Dapper Labs, will oversee Meta’s cross-app partnerships teams again and report to former Instagram COO Justin Osofsky, who’s now head of online sales, operations, and partnerships. Charles Porch will continue to lead Instagram’s partnerships team as VP.
But while change has hit Instagram extra hard this year, some well-known faces and names are here to stay.
Eva Chen, Instagram’s VP of fashion, is still leading the platform’s fashion relationships — including being a central figure for Instagram’s presence at the annual Met Gala.
Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s top executive and public-facing figurehead for the app, will be returning to the US later in 2023 after a stint in London as Instagram shutters its UK operations. In addition to shepherding Instagram forward, he’ll be focused on launching Instagram’s Twitter clone, known by code names Project 92 or Barcelona.
As Instagram enters a new era, who else is among the most influential executives shaping the app?
Insider has compiled a list of 14 top executives at Instagram who lead teams from product marketing to diversity and inclusion. Many of Instagram’s top executives, including Mosseri and Porch, have hailed from Facebook’s earlier days before switching over to Instagram — a sign of Facebook’s lasting impact on the app. We formed this list based on conversations with Instagram insiders and a Meta spokesperson.
